The land of lush green gardens, Ilam is the jewel of the eastern region of Nepal. It is located 700km away from Kathmandu (by roadways). The hill station is renowned for its gardens and is one of Nepal’s regions. Ilam is not widely known for tea gardens, besides there are many other things that are produced here. Amriso, Alaichi (cardamom), Aduwaa(ginger), Akabare (spicy chilli), Chhurpi (a special preserved cheese product), etc., are the other products produced in this region.

The various reasons you must visit Ilam are:

  • Mai Pokhari: The thing that makes this pokhari more special is that Mai Pokhari is a pond in a star shape with nine corners. These nine corners of the pond are dedicated to the gods. It’s a religious importance site for both Hindus and Buddhists as there is a temple of goddess Bhagwati near the pond. You can also enjoy boating, and enjoying the view of beautiful mountains, and green forests.
  • Shree Antu: It lies on the lap of the world’s third tallest mountain, Mountain Kanchenjunga. It is located at an elevation of 2,328m above sea level. This region is renowned for its mesmerizing sunrise and sunset views. Also from this region, you can see the panoramic view of the world’s tallest mountain Everest, along with Kanchenjunga.
  • Sandakpur: It is the famous trekking destination of the eastern region situated at an elevation of 3,636m. The peak of Sandakpur is also renowned as Sandakphu divided by the border of Nepal and west Bengal. Also, this region is renowned for the breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains such as Kanchenjunga, Everest, Makalu, and Lhotse.
  • Sano Pathibhara Temple: The temple of Sano Pathibhara Devi is one of the most sacred religious sites in Ilam. The devotees make resolutions (Bhakkal) here and offer different things to goddesses. Also, It is said to be the sister temple of the original Pathibhara temple of Taplejung.
  • Kanyam and Fikkal: Ilam is renowned for its tea gardens planted in Kanyama and Fikkal over 140 years ago.
