Helambu Trek leads to a wonderful and pleasant trail seldom trekked by many visitors around the less-known area to other wide-world travellers where the trek takes you to high ridges facing stunning views of peaks. Helambu is inhabited by the group of a small ethnic tribe known as Kyalmo closely related to Tamang and Sherpa communities with similar Buddhism religions and cultures. This Helambu Trek trek takes travellers through traditional villages and old monasteries of great religious interest.
Helambu Trek starts with a short drive east of Kathmandu city towards the North East of Valley Rim reaching Sundarijal town. A sundarijal town is a pleasant place with lush green cultivated farm fields as a walk leads to a climb into a serene forest to enter Langtang National Park and Shivapuri Hill Conservation. The journey continues from here with a steep up past Tamang farm villages and after a few hours we will reach our destination, Chisapani.
Chisapani is located above 2,195m and is renowned for amazing sunrise and sunset views of the Central and Eastern Himalaya range of peaks such as Annapurna, Manaslu, Langtang Himal, Ganesh Himal, etc.
After that we will head towards Gul-Bhanjyang, Kutumsang within the cooler alpine climate then up to Thadepatti (3,590m), which is the highest point of our adventure.
From Thadepatti, enjoy the breathtaking views of the mountain range with rolling green hills and valleys as we enter the Helambu region. Gul-Bhanjyang and Kutumsang villages lead us to our main highlight at Tarke-Gyang. Tarke-Gyang is the renowned main village of the Hyalmo tribe. Here you can explore the places adorned with Buddhism and interesting cultures where houses are decorated with fine workmanship of impressive wooden furniture.
At Tarke-Gyang, you will fall in love while exploring the old monastery named Ama Yangri. The surroundings of Ama Yangri are surrounded by amazing landscapes with high snow-capped peaks of the Jugal Himal range.
While returning you will pass through Sermathang village, and walk downhill to reach the warm areas of Melamche Bazar. The trails then join near Dolalghat and Dhulikhel road and we will reach the beautiful Dhulikhel; an old Newari town popular for sunrise views of the Himalayas.
Finally, your Helambu Trek ends after reaching Kathmandu, after a memorable adventure with a short cultural experience on the high green hills of Nepal Central Himalaya.

Day 01: Kathmandu Arrival
Once you arrive at Kathmandu airport, you will meet the Quest Himalayan Trek and Expedition team’s representative and get transferred to the hotel. After checking in, you can relax, explore the nearby places, or even visit our office; it’s your choice. In the evening, a welcome dinner is hosted for you guys in a traditional Nepalese restaurant. Enjoy the taste of Nepalese food while watching the cultural performance.
Day 02: Drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal (1,460 m) and Trek to Chisapani Hill (2,195 m) – 5 hrs
After enjoying your breakfast in the hotel, you will get transferred to Sundarijal on a private tourist bus. From the capital to Sundarijal; it’s a short drive which is about 15 km. After reaching Sundarijal, you will climb to the entrance of Shivapuri and Langtang National Park.
Walking ahead into the forest within farm field villages, you will finally reach Chisapani located on a high ridge north of Kathmandu Valley Rim. Feel the cool fresh air at the height of 2,195m with the views of the world’s highest peaks towards the Jugal Himal range. Chisapani is renowned for offering stunning views of sunrise and sunset views over the mountain range.
Day 03: Trek to Kutumsang (2,141 m) – 6 hrs
In the morning, enjoy the mesmerizing sunrise views over an array of peaks. After enjoying your breakfast, we will walk downhill to head to Pati-Bhanjyang village. We will climb to Thodung Danda Hill and pass over Gulphu-Bhanjyang then finally reach our today’s final destination, Kutumsang. We will spend our night here in Kutumsang.
Day 04: Trek to Melamche-Gaon (2,560 m) – 6 hrs.
Early in the morning, we start our journey towards Yurin Danda Ridge within the cool lovely forest of rhododendron, pines, and oak trees. We will then walk to a small pass at 3,510m high, and head ahead to reach an open area with a climb towards Thadepatti where we enjoy our lunch. Thadepatti is a beautiful place with many simple lodges offering scenic views of the high Langtang and Jugal mountain ranges.
After making a stop at Thadepatti for a while, we will climb to a ridge top with a fabulous view of peaks from the Jugal Himal range with Manaslu, Ganesh etc., towards the west.
From the top, we descend to Melange Gaon as we enter the heavily wooded area of tall rhododendron, pine forest to the base of a hill around a nice grassy field. Then, walk past small farm fields to reach our destination, Melamche Gaon where we will spend our night.
Day 05: Tarke-Gyang (2,570 m) Trekking – 4 hrs.
We will start our morning by enjoying a delicious and healthy breakfast during our stay. Then head towards the major village of Helambu at Tarke Gyang. We will cross the suspension bridge and climb for an hour to finally reach our today’s destination Tarke Gyang village through Nakote village. We will spend our night here in Tarke Gyang village.
Day 06: A day at Tarke-Gyang to explore local culture and views
Tarke-Gyang is renowned for the ancient heritage of the Buddhist religion with colour culture, wood carving, etc. It’s a leisure day so you can explore the Hyalmo people’s lifestyle, their culture and also visit the old monastery named Ama Yangri, the main attraction of the place. We will stay here for tonight.
Day 07: Sermathang (2,693 m) Trekking – 3/4 hrs.
In the morning, we will say goodbye to Tarke Gyang and leave for Sermathang. It’s another short day walk into a lush green forest area past many Chorten (Buddhist prayer monuments) reaching a small village; Gyangyul.
After reaching Gyangyul, we walk on a pleasant winding path with great views of rolling hills to reach our today’s final destination; Sermathang.
Sermathang is another attractive village with Hyolmo residential area, where you can visit and explore old and interesting monasteries.
Day 08: Return to Kathmandu – 4/5 hrs.
After a great time at Tarke Gyang and Sermathang, we trek downhill to reach the low warm area at Melamche Bazar. From here we will get transferred to Kathmandu via private tourist bus.
We start our journey ahead and pass through the Banepa and Sanga areas down close to Bhaktapur city to return to Kathmandu. Our service ends here. We hope you enjoyed your time here in Nepal exploring the untouched and fascinating place of Nepal’s Central Himalaya.

Trekking in Nepal’s Himalayas is a wonderful experience, but you must be prepared ahead for what you are going to experience. So the packing list must be prepared carefully. You probably don’t know what to pack and what to don’t, right? Don’t worry we got you. Your trip to Nepal will surely be memorable, and adventurous if you carry all this mentioned equipment with you for the upcoming trekking days. Be sure to check out the equipment list and manage it before you go on your trek to make sure you have everything you need. Also, there might be differences in the items from one area to another, and from season to season.
Therefore, before you book your Nepal trekking or peak climbing, please read this packing list carefully and arrange it with you. The following are the list of equipments that we suggest to you for trekking in the Himalayas of Nepal.
Trekking Boots: You must pack sturdy and comfortable hiking waterproof boots that provide support and protection to your feet and ankles. Also, be sure that you tie and untie the laces with ease and check that the boot has deep-cut traction on the sole.
Backpack: Choose a backpack with a good quality having of capacity 40-60litres to carry all your gear and personal items. Duffle bag or kit bag is necessary to carry gear while trekking.
Sleeping Bags: It is best to carry your own sleeping bags. For trekking in high-altitudes in Nepal, we advise you to carry a warm and lightweight sleeping bag rated to at least -25C.
Clothing: You will need a variety of clothing depending on the season of your trekking. But for any season trekking, always carry quick-drying, moisture-wicking clothes. Also not to forget the layers are very important for adjusting to changing temperatures during trekking days. So, choose the best brands for a base layer, insulation layer, outer layer, trekking trousers, shirts, waterproof jackets, etc.
Trekking Poles: The use of poles during trekking days is very essential as they help to reduce the impact and stress on your joints and make your trekking days easier, especially on steep and rugged terrain.
First Aid Kit: Don’t forget to carry a first aid kit with essentials such as antiseptic, bandages, pain relievers, blister treatments, etc.
Water Filtration System: Rather than buying bottled water in every lodge, or tea house, we suggest you carry a water bottle with a built-in filter or water purification tablets for safe drinking water.

Frequently Asked Questions
The best time for Helambu Trek is spring (March to May), and autumn (December to November) when the trail offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, and mountains. And, also the weather during these days is sunny and warmer compared to other seasons.
The difficult level of Helambu Trek is an easy to moderate level. Throughout the trekking journey, you will walk for about 6- hours a day only. Also, on some trekking days, you will walk for just 3-4 hours a day. Besides, the trekking route is also not difficult and is well-established. Moreover, any trekkers can finish this Helambu Trek easily.
No, you don’t need any restricted area permit because the Helambu region does not fall under the restricted part of Nepal.
